Here are some curated tips we think you could benefit from before embarking on your photography journey:

Smartphone Camera Features

  • Portrait mode: Many smartphones have this feature, which allows you to blur the background, focusing on the subject of your picture. It's ideal for drawing attention to something you want people to notice.
  • 0.5x mode: Some smartphones offer an ultra-wide lens that allows you to capture more in the frame.
  • Grid lines: Using the grid lines on your phone can be helpful when trying to take a photo accurately. It's also helpful when taking your photos in accordance with the rule of thirds.
  • Photo filters & editing tools: Edit your photo exactly the way you like it using different tools on your phone. Whether you adjust the brightness or increase the exposure, play around with it until it looks profesh.

Lighting

  • Artificial light: If you haven't already got one, you might like to consider a clip-on light for your phone. If natural light is not on your side or you can't seem to make your photos pop, these lights can be super useful. You can get them in different colours (warm, white, etc.) to match your vibe.
  • Natural light: If you have any natural light, make the most of it. Try taking your photos in the garden or close to a window to give them clarity. Take advantage of golden hour, too. This is just after sunrise or just before sunset and can give your photos a golden glow.

Setting Up Your Photoshoot

  • Tripod: Using a tripod can make taking professional-looking photos so much easier. If you have shaky hands or worry about being wonky, a tripod will be your new best friend.
  • Choose the right background: When taking photos for your gender reveal, you want your subject to be the main point of view, not the background. Choose something that complements your subject without cluttering the shot.
  • Distance: You don't want to be too far or too close to your subject. Just bear this in mind when taking your shot, and if you don't think it looks right, experiment with different distances.

Classic & Simple Gender Announcement Photo Ideas

People usually follow the crowd for a reason, and the classics are nothing to be sniffed at.

Keep reading to find out how you can put your own twist on popular gender reveal announcements!

Baby Item Display

Aesthetically group a selection of baby items, such as toys, sleep, aids, bottles, and outfits, with at least one element of blue or pink.

Product widget

Use a whiteboard or letter board as the centre of your photo, and write the words, "Our little baby girl/boy, coming in MM/YY."

Post your display to social media using the caption, "We have a surprise!" or, "We're just as shocked as you!"

Baby Belly

Get your partner (or someone with small hands if you can!) to cover their hands in blue or pink skin-safe paint and make two hand prints directly on the bump.

Have a cute gender reveal photoshoot with your bump and your partner posing with you.

Post this to your socials with the caption, "We're so happy to reveal we're having a girl/boy!" or, "The big reveal is finally here!"

Tip: Before adding the paint, take some maternity photos with your partner. It'll only take a moment, but the memories will last a lifetime.

Big Brother/Sister Clothing

This is a fantastic option for parents who aren't having their first baby and are struggling to think of ways to include their firstborn, who’s likely excited to find out if you're having a boy or girl!

Have a t-shirt made that says something like, "Patiently waiting for my little brother/sister", and get your child to wear it for a little photo!

Ask your little one to pose in a way that matches the text on the t-shirt to increase the cuteness factor.

Caption your post with something like, "Our baby waiting for our new baby!" or, "He/she can't wait for their new baby brother/sister!"

Cute Gender Announcement Photo Ideas

Feeling cutesy during your pregnancy? Use a wholesome and heartwarming gender announcement photo to reveal your surprise to your friends and family.

Cut the Cake

It's a pretty generic option, but precious nonetheless. Depending on your baby's gender, you can make or buy a cake with a pink or blue sponge. A neutral colour, like white, is usually best for the outside of gender-reveal cakes.

If you have one, set up a tripod (you can just stand your phone against something if you don't) and film you and your partner cutting the cake. Some party decorations can be used in the background for added effect.

Watch the video and take screenshots of each moment. Then, post them to your social media and allow your friends and family to relive the moment with you.

Caption your photos with something like, "There's a pink/blue bun in the oven!" or, "We're baking a girl/boy!"

Pregnancy Photoshoot

Don't be camera shy. Get yourself and your partner in front of the camera to complete your baby's gender reveal.

Mum's bump should be the focal point of this image, and all you have to do is write, "It's a..." on the bump using skin-safe ink or paint.

Your partner should then stand behind you, holding up some tiny pink or blue socks in front of the bump so that the writing is still visible.

Caption your shot with, "She/he's almost here!" or, "Our hearts are so full already."

Nursery Reveal

Show off your hard work and use your nursery for your gender reveal photo! We know you'll be proud of your interior design efforts, so why not use this as an excuse to flaunt it?

Many parents opt for a neutral nursery with minimal colour, so if that sounds like you, add a hidden clue to your nursery before you take the picture.

Whether it's a pink/blue toy, piece of clothing, or baby item, hide it somewhere within the picture and snap! See how long it takes for your nearest and dearest to notice.

Here are some captions you could use: "We've been busy getting ready for our new little..." or "Preparing for baby *Surname*."

Seasonal & Fun Gender Announcement Photo Ideas

Does your pregnancy align with a holiday? Intertwine your baby news with the festivities for an extra cute and celebratory gender announcement!

Easter Baby

Fill an Easter basket with yellow shredded paper and white eggs (chocolate or normal – we're not fussy), and place a blue or pink egg in the centre.

You could leave it there or place other Easter decorations around the basket, like chicks, bunnies, and carrots.

Take your photo and be sure to caption it with something like: "We're eggspecting a girl/boy!" or, "The Easter bunnies brought us a girl/boy!"

We're eggcited to see what you come up with using our creative way of announcing your baby's gender!

Halloween Baby

If your new baby has an older sibling between 1 and 2, this is an adorable way to announce the gender.

Get yourself a very large pumpkin from your local patch or supermarket, and remove all the pulp and seeds.

Once you've cleared out your pumpkin, carve out two generously sized holes near the bottom. Using a marker pen, write on the pumpkin, "I'm getting a little sister/brother!"

Now for the fun part. Place your little one inside the pumpkin, with their legs poking out the two holes you carved earlier. Their arms should rest on the top of the pumpkin.

Quickly snap the pic, and you're done.

If this is your firstborn, you can still use a pumpkin; you just might not be able to fill it with a baby. Sorry.

You don't need a caption for this one; it speaks for itself. But, if you want, you can use, "Our little pumpkin is on the way!" or "Little boo loading."

Christmas Baby

Have a bauble or tree decoration made that says, "It's a girl/boy!" in blue or pink. Place it front and centre on your Christmas tree and surround it with an abundance of twinkly lights.

Simply snap your picture and caption it with something like, "Our little Christmas miracle" or, "All we want for Christmas is you!"

It seems simple, but with the added pressure of Christmas, something easy will do the trick.

FAQs

What is a Gender Announcement Photoshoot?

This is a photo you and your partner have taken yourselves or had done professionally, and it is a fun and sweet way to reveal the gender of your new baby to your family and friends.

How Much Does Gender Announcement Photos Cost?

They don't need to cost anything if you do it yourself. You may need to buy props or equipment, but there's a good chance you'll have everything you need at home. If not, you can spend as little or as much as you'd like on creating the perfect photo.

How Many Months Should You Be to Do a Gender Reveal?

You cannot find out the sex of your baby until you're 18-21 weeks pregnant, as the NHS doesn't offer the scan earlier. It's also difficult to tell the sex earlier in the pregnancy.

What Does Green Mean in Gender Reveals?

This trend, created by parents, strays from the typical blue/pink gender reveals we often see. If the reveal is green (balloon confetti, cake sponge, etc.), parents don't want to find out the gender until the baby is born.
