What is a Gender Reveal, & Should I Have One?

During your 20-week scan, you’ll be given the option of finding out the sex of your baby. Some parents want it to be a complete surprise, others find out there and then, but others might want to find out outside the hospital walls.

If the latter option sounds like you, then a gender reveal could definitely be on the cards.

Gender reveals come in all shapes and sizes, and there is no set rule book for how to do yours – it's a personal choice entirely.

You might want to shout it far and wide, have a huge party, and celebrate your happy news with all your friends and family.

But on the other hand, you might not enjoy being made a fuss of, and an at-home reveal with just those closest to you might be more your speed – which is fine, too.

Small Gender Reveal Party Ideas for Family

A small party or gathering is the middle ground. You don't want to go OTT, but you'd still like to celebrate with family and close friends.

Here are some ideas on how to achieve a small gender reveal.

Who to Invite

The simplest way to decide who to invite to your gender reveal is to ask yourself who you'd like to share your happy news with. If you don't want to invite your friend's cousin's mum, you don't have to.

Keeping numbers to a minimum can also be a great option if you're feeling overwhelmed about your pregnancy. Try not to put unnecessary pressure on yourself.

Decorations

As you're keeping your gender reveal small, decorations don't have to be excessive. You could even keep them in one room if your guests fit in there.

Here's a list of minimal decorations to use when keeping your party low-key:

  • Balloon garland
  • 'Baby Girl or Boy' banners
  • Foil fringe curtain

Banners and curtains (backdrops, whatever you want to call them) can turn a room or soon-to-be nursery into a gender-reveal grotto without lots of decorations.

Ballon garlands can also add impact to a room, and they're not as difficult to assemble as you may think. In fact, we’ve put together a little DIY balloon garland guide to help you out…

Step 1: Gather Your Materials & Tools

All you need is some balloons, balloon garland tape, string, and scissors.

Step 2: Inflate & Attach

Blow up your balloons (a few packs should do it). A pump might be useful if you're preparing this on your own.

Cut the balloon garland tape to your desired length, and start attaching the balloons by threading the tie through the small holes.

Step 3: Hang It Up

Once your garland looks the way you want it, tie a piece of string to each end of the tape.

It's best to tie both ends of the string to something on your wall, but if this isn't possible, you can tape it to the wall (watch out for peeling paint off once you remove the garland).

Step 4: Added Extras

Go the extra mile and try filling any gaps in the garland with flowers or greenery to make the garland pop!

What to Do on the Day of Your Gender Reveal

By inviting close family and friends to your gender reveal, you remove the pressure of having to 'entertain' them while they're in your home. It's likely they already know each other, so they’ll be happy chatting and catching up.

But if you want to make the day more exciting, games and food are always a crowd pleaser.

Keeping within our low-key theme, you can always play a few board games you might already have in the house.

You don't have to play baby-related games just because it's a gender reveal. Keep it light-hearted, though; we don't want any fallouts before the big reveal.

Food-wise, buffets are usually popular. It doesn't have to be massive, just enough to fit everybody's dietary requirements.

Ideas for Your Small Gender Reveal

On to the best part of the day, and it's a moment you'll remember forever, so be sure to choose a reveal that you will enjoy.

Here are a few easy gender reveal ideas that you can use for your small gathering.

#1 Gender Reveal Cake

This is a popular option with expecting parents, because it's so simple.

During your 20-week scan, request that the baby's gender be in a sealed envelope.

Then, you can ask a bakery of your choice to bake a cake with a blue (boy) or pink (girl) sponge with plain icing on the outside. Give the bakery your envelope, and done!

Cut the cake with your partner to reveal the gender.

#2 Open the Envelope

This one really is what it says on the tin. Just because you've organised a reveal party doesn't mean you can't simply open your envelope to find out.

Sometimes, a special moment, shared with those closest to you, is all you need to make something memorable.

#3 Scratch-Off Reveals

You need someone you trust to open your scan envelope and order these for you, so this is a great option as long as you're okay with a loved one knowing the secret before you do.

Personalised scratch-off cards can be ordered from places like Amazon and Etsy, and they can be a fun way to get everyone involved in revealing the gender. They can also be a little keepsake from the day.

Gender Reveal Ideas for You & Your Household

For the ultimate low-key gender reveal, you don't have to do it in front of anyone. Maybe you just want it to be you and the other half (or whoever you live with) and share the news later.

Sometimes, gender reveals can be emotional because the realisation that you're having a new baby has just sunk in, and it can be comforting to share that moment with your partner or the person closest to you.

Note: If you have them, include your other children. Their excitement will magnify your own!

Creative Gender Reveals at Home

Realistically, you could just open the envelope with your partner and find out the sex of your baby just like that. A quaint option.

Alternatively, if you want to do something a little more fun to mark the occasion, here are some unique gender reveal ideas for the family.

#1 Gender Reveal Fortune Cookies

Order you and your partner's favourite takeaway (it doesn't have to be Chinese food) and have a cosy night in.

Once you've finished with your food, open your personalised fortune cookie together to reveal the gender of your baby.

Personalised fortune cookies can be found on many online websites. Just remember to ask a loved one to order them for you so you don't spoil the surprise.

#2 Gender Reveal Cupcakes

This is the same process as the gender reveal cakes above, but cupcakes might be less wasteful if they're only for two people.

You and your partner will bite into a cake simultaneously to reveal a pink or blue sponge.

#3 Gender Reveal Silly String

Silly string could be a funny way to include your children and reveal the gender of their new sibling.

All you'd have to do is ask a trusted person to buy some silly string, depending on the gender inside the envelope from your scan. Then go crazy

Spray the string at each other to find out what you're having!
